EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR POST
Unique opportunity to lead the operations of a diverse and creative congregation. Sinai Temple, a leading synagogue with global reach is seeking an Executive Director who can lead the 110-year-old organization into the future. Building on the strengths of its leadership and Rabbi David Wolpe, who was named The Most Influential Rabbi in America by Newsweek, and one of The 50 Most Influential Jews in the World by The Jerusalem Post, the new ED will be a key partner and trusted advisor to the Board as it creates a vision for growth.
Sinai Temple is a Conservative synagogue, with three principal operating units functioning within one legal entity. First, there are traditional synagogue operations, which includes a large religious school, three nearby apartment buildings and a single-family residence. Second, there is Sinai Akiba Academy, consisting of an early childhood education center and a K through 8th grade Jewish Day School. Third, there is Mount Sinai Memorial Parks and Mortuaries operating at two locations, one in Hollywood Hills and the other in Simi Valley.
Overview
The Executive Director (“ED”) serves as the chief administrative officer of the Temple in accord with principles, guidelines and objectives set forth by the Board of Directors. The ED provides the day-to-day management of the Temple’s fiscal and administrative affairs and has direct supervisory control over all administrative, security, technology, and facilities personnel of the Temple, other than the Senior Rabbi and other clergy. Included are all support functions, management of professional staff, support staff and volunteers, financial management, Temple member relations, insurance coverage for all properties and operations, technology and communications and facilities management of the Temple. The ED is responsible, with input from the Senior Rabbi with respect to ritual matters, for the overall scope of Temple activities and is involved in varying degrees with its many programs and services. The ED serves as the most senior person among the Temple's non-clergy staff. The ED reports directly to the President and works closely and collaboratively with the Senior Rabbi.
• Strong leadership ability with a record of success. Experience in a non-profit environment is preferred but not required.
• Success in hiring, supervising, developing, and retaining staff members and building effective teams and organizations.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to interact effectively with congregants, clergy, staff, and lay leadership in furtherance of the Temple’s Mission Statement.
• Ability to create a warm, welcoming community at all levels for Temple members, clergy, staff, and visitors.
• A proven track record in fiscal, financial, and budgetary matters, including establishment of policies and procedures and follow through of same.
• A strong background in technology issues, including hardware, software, and related security matters.
• Ability to recognize key issues and develop creative and appropriate solutions, as well as the ability to multitask, understanding the big picture while maintaining a focus on individual duties.
• Ability to work effectively under periods of stress and time constraints.
• A track record of innovation and ability to respond to new challenges and opportunities facing synagogues and the Jewish community.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Sufficient Jewish knowledge to direct Temple activities and to function, other than with respect to ritual activities, effectively as a Temple representative and spokesperson.
• Be ready and adaptable to take on new tasks, as well as demonstrate flexibility and understanding of changes in program needs from the Temple and other operations.
• Must be a team player who strives to provide excellent service and make sure all business and programs run smoothly and in compliance with legal, ethical, and Conservative religious requirements.
• Must be committed to being an active and involved member of the Sinai Temple community.
